Since 1880, the Basque company has been designing and crafting table linens and bedding that have graced the homes of distinguished families, including the House of Alba.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the mid-19th century, the parents of Manuel Mendoza<\/strong> crossed the border from Fermoselle<\/strong>, a small village in Zamora, into Portugal to purchase Dutch lace shawls, which they then sold to their Castilian neighbors. And so began the story of Los Encajeros<\/strong>, a company that would go on to adorn some of the most luxurious bedrooms in Europe and the Americas. But the true origin of this small, family-run business \u2014 dedicated to the design and craftsmanship of table linens and bedding \u2014 lies a little farther north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1880<\/strong>, just after turning sixteen, Manuel Mendoza<\/strong> moved to Bilbao<\/strong> in search of the prosperity driven by the region\u2019s booming iron industry. \u201cMy grandfather laid the foundation for our company: always offer a product of the highest quality. That\u2019s why he moved to Bilbao, where he found wealthy bourgeois clients,\u201d explains Jos\u00e9 Manuel Mendoza<\/strong>, a third-generation member of the family business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the capital of the Basque province, Mendoza opened the first Los Encajeros<\/strong> store, where he sold fabrics and embroidery imported from across Europe \u2014 especially Belgium and Switzerland. \u201cBy 1902, the press was already praising my grandfather\u2019s business acumen. El Eco de Madrid<\/em> featured us in an article about having one of the largest fabric warehouses in Spain,\u201d says his grandson, whose father, Jos\u00e9 Mendoza<\/strong>, later expanded the business further. In 1930<\/strong>, he opened the family\u2019s second store in Bilbao and began working with artisans and workshops to produce exclusive pieces for their clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1958<\/strong>, the family passed the torch once again as a 19-year-old Jos\u00e9 Manuel Mendoza<\/strong> took over one of the stores. But standing behind a counter wasn\u2019t his calling. Instead, he began traveling across Spain with Leandro Alfonso Luis Ruiz Moragas<\/strong>, the illegitimate son of King Alfonso XIII<\/strong>. \u201cHe had strong ties with the Church, so we\u2019d visit convents to sell hospital bed linens, bridal trousseaus \u2014 even nuns\u2019 habits,\u201d he recalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was during these travels that Mendoza realized how well their fabrics were received beyond Bilbao, and he began showcasing their collections in other cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn 1983<\/strong>, we were in Seville<\/strong>, where we met the Duchess of Alba<\/strong>, who ordered some of our fabrics,\u201d he says. That same year, however, floods in Bilbao<\/strong> caused serious damage to several of their stores. \u201cLuckily, our warehouse was spared because it was located in Las Arenas<\/strong>, one of the city\u2019s higher neighborhoods,\u201d notes Mendoza, who, rather than giving up, chose to pursue international expansion<\/strong>. Three years after the flood, Los Encajeros<\/strong> exhibited in Paris<\/strong>, kicking off a journey that took them across Europe, Mexico, and the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Jos\u00e9 Manuel Mendoza\u2019s daughters<\/strong> lead the business, which in 2016<\/strong> opened its first location in Madrid<\/strong> and has since won over clients in New York<\/strong>, including finance magnate Leon Black<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
