From Bilbao to Madrid \u2014 and from there\u2026 to the sky.<\/strong>
Los Encajeros<\/strong>, the Bilbao-based atelier dedicated to crafting home linens since 1880, has now landed in Madrid\u2019s Barrio de Salamanca<\/strong>, right at the heart of its most natural clientele. Today, the firm is led by two representatives of the fourth generation<\/strong> of the Mendoza family: M\u00f3nica and Mar\u00eda Mendoza<\/strong>, great-granddaughters of the founder, who share responsibilities, duties, and travel schedules, under the watchful guidance of their father, Jos\u00e9 Manuel Mendoza<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jos\u00e9 Manuel<\/strong> attributes the success of Los Encajeros to the refined taste that has always characterized the families of Bilbao. \u201cWe sell to some of the most important people in Spain, and it\u2019s truly a privilege \u2014 they also give us great ideas. When we started, there were homes in Las Arenas (Bilbao)<\/strong> where not a single wrinkle was allowed on a tablecloth, and the bedspreads were changed when the doctor came to visit. Sometimes, we even had to teach how to properly make a bed. Now, we\u2019re reaching places like Palm Beach<\/strong> and Qatar<\/strong>, where our traditions are being adopted. And honestly, we\u2019re proud \u2014 these are artisanal, Spanish customs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The family also keeps a vast and secret archive<\/strong> filled with antique patterns, sketches, and embroidery samples. Jos\u00e9 Manuel recalls his father \u2014 a man of refined taste \u2014 who would travel to Belgium<\/strong> to source the finest linens, or to Switzerland<\/strong> for the best organdy, then bring it all back to Bilbao for sale. \u201cBack then, fabric was sold by the meter because every household had its own seamstresses,\u201d Mendoza remembers. \u201cWe also worked with convents, where bridal trousseaux were sewn. By the way, Don Leandro de Borb\u00f3n<\/strong> (then known as Ruiz) was our sales representative in those convents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company\u2019s golden era came in the 1960s<\/strong>, when they opened their own in-house workshop<\/strong>. Today, Los Encajeros<\/strong> employs 40 seamstresses<\/strong>. \u201cIt\u2019s important to remember,\u201d explains Jos\u00e9 Manuel, \u201cthat in those days people spent their summers in the north \u2014 full three-month holidays. Important families would come to Las Arenas<\/strong> and Neguri<\/strong>, and debutante balls were hosted in private homes. That doesn\u2019t happen as much anymore, but the taste has remained. That\u2019s how our name began to spread across Spain. We had amazing clients nationwide, starting with the Royal Family<\/strong> itself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
