The art historian and curator charts her hometown\u2019s evolution<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I grew up in Bilbao and studied history here at the University of Deusto. I moved to London to work for a political think tank in 2000, just as Bilbao was starting to transform from a small Basque city into an international art destination. This\u00a0comprehensive overhaul didn\u2019t happen overnight; Bilbao really flourished with the\u00a0opening of the Guggenheim\u00a0in 1997, famously designed by Frank Gehry. The result is what\u2019s known as the \u201cBilbao effect\u201d, where\u00a0a single building brings new economic and cultural life to a place.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After receiving my MA in art history from the Courtauld Institute in 2005, I stayed in London to work at the V&A before returning to the Basque country to help launch the Crist\u00f3bal Balenciaga Museoa. From there I went to Paris for seven years, where I was director of the Palais Galliera, the city\u2019s museum of fashion history. I never imagined I\u2019d be considered for the role of director of the Guggenheim; it\u2019s beyond a museum. Moving back here after so long away, I\u2019ve been struck by the city\u2019s vibrancy and beauty: nature is always present, with the mountains and the sea fused together.  …<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For design, Mosel has been a source of\u00a0furniture and decorative objects since the \u201960s, while Los Encajeros sells beautiful\u00a0handmade linens<\/strong>. And Librer\u00eda Astarloa is\u00a0a place where I go to buy or just\u00a0get inspiration from their impeccable antique and second-hand books. Over the\u00a0years I have bought everything from rare art books to fashion sketches, 18th-century engravings and works by\u00a0contemporary Basque artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
